In short: apart from imitating its appearance, artificial leather has nothing in common with genuine leather. This fact is important to know, especially when it comes to cleaning and care. Cover materials made of imitation leather are an inexpensive alternative to genuine leather and currently back in fashion. This material also features certain advantages – above all it is reasonable in price and very easy to care for.

What exactly differentiates artificial leather from genuine leather?

Genuine leather is a tanned animal hide, i. e. a natural material. Artificial leather, on the other hand, is a collective term for textile materials coated with plastic (mostly on one side, mainly with PVC or PU) to imitate the look of leather. The leather appearance is imitated through a special pressing process. Cleaning and care of artificial leather furniture is considerably different to that of genuine leather: Genuine leather is cleaned and then treated with a refatting care lotion. This can penetrate deep into the leather through the pores and nurtures it from within. Artificial leather, on the other hand, is cleaned and then treated with a moisturiser. In contrast, to genuine leather, a care lotion will not be applied because the plasticisers in the artificial leather coating react with the fatty and oily substances in a care lotion, producing unsightly results and possibly even damaging the surface. Furthermore, the closed PVC coating is unable to absorb the lotion; this instead will merely leave an unpleasant film on the surface. Regular cleaning and care is important because otherwise, artificial leather can become brittle over time.

WHAT CAN I DO TO KEEP MY ARTIFICIAL LEATHER FURNITURE LOOKING GOOD FOR A LONG TIME?

We recommend dusting artificial leather furniture with Cleaning Glove once a week. Moisten the glove slightly. By cleaning your furniture regularly with the Cleaning Glove you will remove everyday dirt as well as minor oily or greasy deposits.
